| Established in 2001, Mälamapöki’i provides culturally-driven, bi-lingual infant, toddler and preschool education to students ranging from 3 months to 5 years. The intent of Mälamapöki‘i is to improve the educational attainment of Native Hawaiian children and to provide a place where children and families can be nurtured together. As Hawai’i’s first bi-lingual early childhood model, Mälamapöki’i also develops bi-lingual instructional materials including cultural manipulatives. Because of a lack of culture-based, community-based curriculum materials in Hawaiian or English, Mälamapöki‘i has developed its own children’s books and instructional materials, including Hawaiian focused manipulatives. The materials use objects familiar to the Hawaiian culture and the children. For example, books incorporate the child’s surroundings in stories, such as the unique winds, rains, mountains and streams of Waimea. Mälamapöki‘i staff also collaborates with elementary teachers at Kanu o ka ‘Äina New Century Public Charter School in developing a seamless Hawaiian-focused 0-10 curriculum, as a model for Hawaiian-focused early childhood education. |
